Spring Fever
Tuesday, April 29, 2003. Entry #214

I've been having that Circle the Continent fantasy again. You remember. The one where we pull up stakes and spend the next year circumnavigating North America?

Not sure what is provoking this latest burst of wanderlust. Maybe it's job boredom; maybe it's a need for new stimulation of some kind.

Maybe it's just that it's spring. We've been having beautiful weather here the last couple weeks. All sun and warmth and the bright green of new grass, if you ignore the two feet of snow we got on Saturday, most of which is melted away now.

Spring is my favorite time of the year. I love it beyond all other seasons. The clean air, the rain, the new growth...just seeing all the fresh green appearing everywhere lightens my spirits, making me want to spread my arms and fly.

I mentioned the desire to pick up and go to Lisa the other day.

"So why don't we?" she said.

"What about the cats? And the Tiny Dinosaur?" I replied.

"We can find someone to take care of them."

"And the hamster? The frog? The guinea pigs? We're just going to dump them on your Mom's doorstep with a note?"

She rolled her eyes at me.

But really, I can't even see it as being possible any more. It's not like people don't do that sort of thing. There are multitudes hiking across France or bedding down in hostels in Portugal. Thousands of people every year set aside their day-to-day lives and go on an adventure. Our friend Pam left the country to spend a year or more teaching English in a small town in mainland China, for God's sake.

Am I too old? Have I passed the point where I can give it all up and go wandering? Have my roots set themselves too deep to ever be uprooted? Shit, if I give serious consideration to the idea, I end up fretting about how we'll afford it, and what we'll do when we get back with an empty year on our resumes and no savings to live off.

If we had won the $35 million lottery the other week, this would be a different story. We'd be picking out the colors of our new touring car and taking bids from travel agencies to decide who would best help us spend out winnings.

But we didn't, and we're trapped by reality. Reality says that we don't have the savings to live an entire year without income. Reality says that no one is willing to pay me to loaf my way around the continent.

And every time I think about it, it bums me out even more.

We have, on the other hand, made vast strides towards general cleanliness around the apartment. We did a major clean-and-tidy two weeks ago, and we still remain presentable to surprise guests.

I guess anything is possible.

His biggest mistake was telling Rob that he'd vote him out when it was his turn. If he hadn't said that, Alex would still be on the show and Lisa would still have her pick in the office pool.

But he did, and Rob jumped ship. Maybe Heidi and Jenna can lure him back with generous displays of naked woman-ness, but I doubt it.

It does, however, speak well about Christy making it much farther. I like that.
