Picnic Day

Friday, June 14, 2002. Entry #163

The Good News:

I get to spend the afternoon out in the sun, lazing around in a park, drinking beer and eating hot dogs, maybe playing a little Frisbee.

The Bad News:

It's Office Picnic Day.

Dum dum DUM.

Okay, it's not all that bad. It's not the whole company or anything, just us in E-Commerce, getting together to celebrate summer. A little park side potluck to kick off the season. And it gets me out of the office on a sunny Friday afternoon.

But this all harkens back to my self-pitying post on Tuesday. There just aren't any of these people who I will be really comfortable hanging out with. They all have their little cliques already, and will be hanging with them.

The two folks I'm closest too, our writers Ben and Lara, are both out of town today, so I'll be without that particular life raft. Sigh.

It shouldn't be that bad. Everyone's there to have a good time, and I'm a fair shot with a Frisbee, so things should go well.

Plus there's beer. Beer makes everything better.

My throat is feeling improved today -- still rough, but manageable -- but the laryngitis is still there. Laryngitis sometimes lasts for a long time after the reason for it is gone, so I'm not expecting any miracles.

I also started taking the acid reduction medication this morning. I have high hopes that it will work.

Pills make everything better.

Finally saw the last of Sum of All Fears last night. Not sure if it was worth sitting through the first hour twice.

The ever-weird Ebert liked it a whole lot and thought it had a good, happy ending, and I guess it did. It made me happy I don't live in the U.S. The odds of someone nuking Calgary are really slight.

Out of time! More on the weekend!

One Year Ago Today: I was still on hiatus, but in 1841, the first Canadian parliament opened in Kingston, Ontario.

Mom Rating: 4.5 out of 5. Mom thinks it's good I'm getting out in the sun, and I should learn to play nice with the other kids.
