Spam Bomb

Getting spam bombed here. So if you commented in the last couple days, it may have got lost in the muck and mess. Sorry about that.

Oh, and I'm pulling the chat. It was fun, and I have a good time talking to you folks who used it, but I don't have time for it at work anymore.

Updates All Over

Hey folks! I've posted a batch of updates over at the Pop Blog -- a couple new movie trailers, plus a bunch of stuff on the new Fall television season. It's been a while, so I thought it best to throw up a mention for any interested people.

Just a reminder of my sites:
What I Saw Today... - Longer essays and personal entries. Updated periodically (Wednesdays mostly).
8-Track Mind - My primary blog. Things I find on the net, random thoughts, that sort of thing.
Pop Blog - My humble opinions on the state of movies and television.
Out of the Doghouse - My LiveJournal site. Mostly used as a notification list for the other sites, but also the repository of Internet quiz results and similar malarky.

All of them have syndication feeds for News Readers and you can sign up for email notification on What I Saw oday... entries at the bottom of the WIST main page.

There's a new toy on the top right of this page. When I'm logged in, you can chat with me! Woo!

I'm an Idiot

I'm a complete moron. While busy cleaning out the spam comments on the system, I managed to delete all comments from the last year.

Sigh.

Hey folks

Has it really been this long? Guess so...

Been several weeks of illness and stress and holiday cheer (and not a few hours of video game goodness) and the poor victim of all that has been the website.

Well, I'll be trying to ramp up this week. There's new content appearing on the Pop Blog as the new season ramps up (there's already some new Survivor stuff there) and I promise something on the main site tomorrow, hell or high water.

Happy New Year!

Trying Again

Okay, comments are back on. Let's see if the bomb is still coming...

Comments

Commenting is turned off for now until this latest spam-bomb I'm experiencing goes away.

Changes

Swapped a few things around to make it easier to update the style of this place. It was looking kind of bland.

Can Anyone Read Chinese?

Why has the webpage I used to propose to Lisa been copied to a Chinese weblog including the picture? The hell?

Alberta Blogs

In the interest of shameless self-promotion, I've joined Alberta Blog, a group of local folks linking for the purposes of disseminating their collective views on the world. They seem to be mostly right-wing political commentators, but we shan't hold that against them.

This doesn't mean I'm going to get all political here, but you may now get more meaningful information and less quiz results and memes.

Whew

I've finally managed to stem the tide of comment spam here. Not that you guys would have noticed, as I've managed to keep most of it behind the scenes for months.

But every day I'd come in and delete dozens of spam comments that were forced into 'moderation' by my Moveable Type filter. Not an onerous task, but I noticed that ALL the comment spam I get refers to online poker these days. So I've put in some keywords to keep that out. So never use the phrase 'texas holdem' in your comments, or it will be blocked. Heh.

Image Fix

Finally changed the image on the home page to represent Wednesday's entry.

February 09, 2005

I do *have* a post...

I can't get MovableType's scheduled post function to work, so I have to manually publish, and I just didn't have time this morning. So I'll link it up when I get home.

It's pretty. Worth waiting two weeks for.

I hope.

Happy Ho-Ho

This is it until after Christmas. Have a wonderful holiday everyone!

Not fixed yet

So Zarq came over to 'fix' the computer the other day, and found that whatever I did, I really, really hooped it. He was able to get Windows 98 to respond, but not to recognize my network card. So no way to download patches, access the Internet, etc.

The next solution is to Ghost all the data off the machine and then do a full, clean reinstall, wiping everything out.

Sigh.

Anyway. No new entry in What I Saw Today... today.

Again.

Extreme Stupidity

No What I Saw essay tomorrow morning.

Advice to the World: Do not try to remove a Trojan Horse from your system while hepped up on cold medication.

I installed a new anti-virus program on my computer Saturday, and it promptly discovered a Trojan Horse that had buried itself in my system file and registry. The anti-virus couldn't get it out, so it was up to a manual removal.

I cleaned the registry fine, but then I had to dig into the System file. Windows refused to delete it, so I was forced to go into DOS and attack it at the root level.

Never a good idea, but I've done it before, so I should be fine. So said my clever brain, floating on a sea of NyQuil.

I knew the name of the file started with "A", so I figured I'd do a directory listing to make sure I had the name right and to check and see if there were any associated files.

I meant to type "DIR A*.*" which means "List all files starting with the letter A".

Of course, my brain had jumped a step, saying as soon as I know the filename I can type "DEL filename" and be done with it.

You see it, don't you?

Of course. I typed "DEL A*.*".

I deleted every file in my Windows System directory that started with the letter A.

Nothing works. Explorer crashes every time you try to browse a directory. The video driver is messed up, it can't find my CR-ROM and somehow my BIOS isn't working right.

I need to re-install Windows 98, but I can't get the system to read the CD-ROM drive, so I can't even do that.

I could only have done more damage with an axe.

So no entry until things clear up. Next week we'll figure something out, assuming the computer isn't fixed.

Sigh.

Bloggers

Anyone out there know what happened to the Cowtown Bloggers site? It seems to be long gone. The ring still looks like it exists, but the site it links to is a placeholder for a domain store.

Weird

The dates are coming up in Czech format. Strange...
