| Feb 9: new entry coming tonight I did something I really needed to do today. I went for a walk. Now before everyone congratulates me on doing something for my health, that's not why I did it. This isn't the precursor to some new health resolution (although we have vowed to make some good changes when we move into the new house: a new start=a new start). No, I just needed to get out.
Today was the nicest day in a long stretch, with temperatures comfortably in the positives. My lungs were filled with the accumulated dust of a year-and-a-half without dusting (all of which was sent into the air by a weekend of furious packing). And I was starting to get a headache from staring at the monitor. So I went out. I rearranged things a bit so I could escape for the latter half of my lunch hour. Spring has always been my favorite time of year. And yes, I know the official first day of spring is two months off (it's not even Groundhog Day for gosh sakes), but the snow is melting and the air is warm and has that bright tang of new growth. In fact, as I walked along the side of Prince's Island Park, I saw green grass in the spots where the snow had melted. Sure, this could be a result of the fact that this year the grass stayed green right up to the first snowfall, but I choose to believe that spring is coming early. The ducks and geese agree with me. Don't they fly south for the winter? Most of them seem to have stuck around all winter this year. There were certainly platoons of ducks crowding around the thawed pools beside the island. It was lovely. The exercise itself was nice - a half-hour brisk stroll isn't enough to get the heart pounding, but any exercise is good exercise they tell me. I think the sunshine and cool, fresh air were more beneficial though. I feel restored, awake, alert. Enough to get me through another eight hours at the computer. Two hours later. Memo to self: Should this become a habit in the future, bring good walking shoes. Work dress shoes unsuitable for outside excursions. Ouch ouch ouch. |
