| This week is all about new beginnings. For one, I started my new job this week. I’m on the web team of a big communications firm, coordinating the Internet aspects of what they hope to be an extremely lucrative new direction. It’s a real, grownup sort of job with a decent salary. Not only that, but I’m perfectly suited for the position. I’m not a webmonkey any more! Yay! Long-time readers know that when I lose a job, I stop posting. Posting to What I Saw Today has always been an escape for me, a chance to step away from my work desk and do something for myself. So when I get laid off, I: A) have nothing to escape from, B) feel extra guilty about taking time away from job hunting, and C) know how boring it is for you all to read about A & B. Over and over. Thus, the hiatus. My posting has never been regular, and I’m sure that has cost me readers. Folks like to have their regular fix of whatever creative source they prefer and never knowing when the muse will strike makes it difficult to develop a regular readership. My deepest affection for those of you who have stood by through all of that, by the way. And who still remain here after my latest hiatus. So I decided to start anew. Again. I’m using Moveable Type this time out, with the thought of reducing the amount of time I spent re-formatting every static page on the old site. On top of however long it took me to write each entry, it took an additional half-hour to an hour to format it and post it. Moveable Type allows me to do it dynamically, and post from anywhere where there is computer access. No more fussing with HTML tags. Just write, edit and post. I am also introducing a strict schedule of weekly posting. Every Wednesday there will be a new entry here for your reading enjoyment. This gives you a time to return every week and me a deadline to live up to. Weeks where there will be no posting (holidays, etc.) will be announced in advance. I will do my best to minimize the number of these. I don’t plan on changing the content too greatly – it’s still all about me, after all – but a weekly column will let me devote more time to issues, essays and creative works. NaNoWriMo excerpts, re-edited bits of my novel ‘Halfway to Dead’, and more will all make their way here. Pop culture features, such as movie reviews, incorrect Survivor predictions and the like will be moved over to my new Pop Blog, which will debut soon. As well, 8-Track Mind will reappear, as the haven for all my random thoughts and links. Gone is the Incredible Shrinking Blog. I didn’t find it as helpful as I thought. For your information, the final tally of weight loss over that three-month period was 50 pounds. Since then I’ve been mostly stable, with a little backsliding in the last few weeks. I’ll be upping my time on the bike to compensate. Moveable Type also has a built-in notify system, so once I get the bugs worked out, we’ll switch away from the old Yahoo! List. This should please those of you with the deep-seated fear of large corporate entities stealing and selling your email address. I’ll be the only one who will have access to it for utmost security. So here it is. The brand-new, much-like-the-old-one-except-weekly, What I Saw Today. Enjoy! |
